Thousands of protesters called for the downfall of Mr. Morsi’s government in Cairo, while others ransacked the offices of the president’s former party in Suez, Alexandria and other cities,The New York Times reported. In a speech to his supporters the president said "“God’s will and elections made me the captain of this ship.”

At a press conference in Cairo on Saturday, Abdel-Meguid Mahmoud the formidable chief prosecutor who Mr Morsi has tried to remove before and is now unilaterally replacing said that he is willing to go to court to dispute Moris's decision and warned "againt any attempt to disrupt the work of the judicial system". President Morsi said that his assumption of these extra powers is only temporary and is meant to securethe aims of the revolution and democracy but his detractors point out that this was the argument of his predecessor and opposition politician Mohamed ElBaradei charges that Mr Morsi has "appointed himself Egypt's new pharaoh".
