Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz said on Saturday that his country was "not ready" to engage in a "war" in Mali, while being wary of any discussions with Ansar Dine, one of Islamist groups that occupy the north of Mali.

"We are not ready to engage in a war," the Mauritanian President told the weekend edition of Le Monde on the day of his d return to Mauritania after more than a month of convalescence in Paris. He had been hospitalized in France after being accidentally shot near Nouakchott, October 13 by an officer in the Mauritanian army.
He said that Mauritania did not actually want to participate inthe military intervention in northern Mali under the auspices of the Community of States of West Africa (ECOWAS) as Mauritania is not a member,of this regional group.The military option should only be taken after exhausting all other options,echoinghe position of Algeria. Mauritania shares 2,400 km of borders with Mali andhas previously attacked AQIMin northern Mali by air and with ground troops. However he asserted that military intervention could unite the different forces against the forces they regarded as invaders
Mauritanian President recommended great caution regarding Ansar Dine, one of the Islamist Tuareg groups who expressed support for the "political dialogue" with Bamako saying that he would not deal with groups linked to terrorists as they could be unreliable.
However he said that he shared with France the same desire to end the "hotbed of terrorism in the Sahel."
