Abdelaziz Belkhadem a former prime minister and close confidant of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika had been secretary general of the FLN party since 2005. 160 Central Committee members voted in favor of withdrawal of confidence in Belkhadem.
This follows the resignation last month of Ahmed Ouyahia as secretary general of the RND party, the main coalition partner with the FLN. Both Ouyahia and Belkhadem were former prime ministers and had said that they would stand in forthcoming presidentialelections in 2014 but this now looks unlikely. A report by Echorouk suggested that President Abdelaziz Bouteflika might stay on as President and extend his period of office by two years.
